In his final Headgear selection ever, Lee Corso will officially retire from ESPN’s College Gameday in Columbus, Ohio for one last selection where he’ll either put on the mascot head of Brutus the Buckeye or Hook’Em likely after saying “Not so fast, my friend!” The 90 year-old’s first ever pick was made in October of 1996 in Columbus, and he has a 286-144 record for a 66.51% accuracy rate.
Whatever you think of College Gameday and what it has become now, with Pat McAfee and Nick Saban as the new additions, Desmond Howard’s awkward Michigan homerism, and Kirk Herbstreit trying to be as neutral as possible during what feels like the 8 hours of coverage leading up to the Noon game, it has become engrained into the culture of gearing up for a full day of watching football on the couch all day long and tracking our picks, too.
Figuring out what gets elected as the “Gameday Game” where the studio comes to the campus has also been a part of seeing which games on the schedule matter that week. It’s fascinating in that they have to balance the selection of the best possible game while also not featuring the same teams and regions every single week.
We know that Corso is going to be in Columbus when the two preseason top ranked teams face off at noon (much to the chagrin of the Buckeye fans), but let’s take a look ahead and project which games could be Gameday sites the remainder of the year. We’ll also take a swing and guess who the celebrity guest picker is based on the site. Usually it’s an alum or a country singer you’ve never heard of, but maybe the Timothee Chalamet phenomenon changes that!
