Mike Gundy Just Chose A Starting Quarterback Before Mid-Season. Everything You Need To Know About Hauss Hejny.

By Keaton Hargett (OSU Class of 2021)

For the first time in what feels like forever, Oklahoma State isn’t dragging its feet on a quarterback decision. Hauss Hejny, the redshirt freshman transfer from TCU, is the guy. No “we’ll see who trots out there.” No Week Four QB carousel. Gundy actually named a starter before the season opener. I too had to check to see if Hell had frozen over.

Hejny gets the nod for Thursday, August 28 vs. UT Martin at Boone Pickens. Then he’s staring down the barrel of a trip to Eugene on September 6 to play Oregon. Trial by fire doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Hejny’s Resume — Texas-Bred Winner

Hejny’s not walking in blind. At Aledo High School, he won back-to-back state championships, finished on a 30-game win streak, threw for nearly 2,800 yards and 27 TDs, and ran for another 1,000+ with 13 scores. The kid knows how to win.

He transferred from TCU this offseason to follow OC Doug Meacham, and that’s huge. Meacham’s offense fits his dual-threat, chaos-making style.

Don’t Sleep on Zane Flores

Here’s the thing: this wasn’t a loser-leaves-town match. Zane Flores is a badass quarterback in his own right. He holds a mountain of high school passing records from Nebraska, came in as one of the most decorated recruits in his state’s history, and he’s going to be just fine whether he starts this year or next.

So no, fans don’t need to freak out about transfers or “what ifs.” Either way, we’re in good hands and honestly, I’m just happy this isn’t another year of Gundy refusing to pick a guy until October.

What to Expect

  • UT Martin (Aug 28): This is Hejny’s first shot, and Flores will probably still see the field.
  • Oregon (Sept 6): It is more likely that Mike Gundy, with his back against the wall, beats Oregon w a Freshman QB.

I might be biased, but Hejny looks like a young Manziel. My 13yo cousin asked me to donate money to his Aledo middle school football program, so as an Aledo donor, I have to love Hauss.

College Athletics Players Association

Look, if you’re a college athlete reading this, pay attention. Just like OSU finally picked a starting quarterback, it’s time players start taking control of their own futures. That’s exactly what the College Athletic Players Association is about.

This isn’t just talk — it’s the first college players union, built to make sure athletes actually have a voice. NIL money, health protections, long-term support — the stuff that matters once the lights go out.

But here’s the deal: none of this happens without you. We need 65% of college athletes to sign up to make this union official. If you care about your future and the future of college sports, go to CollegeAthleticsPA.com and sign up today. Don’t wait.

The faster you sign up, the faster athletes stop getting left behind.

Alum’s Perspective

I graduated from Oklahoma State in 2021. I’ve seen the program at its peak, and I’ve seen it trip over its own shoelaces. This quarterback battle actually feels like a turning point.

Hejny is the starter. Flores is damn good too and for once, we’re not walking into Week One wondering who the hell’s under center.

Whether it works out or blows up, at least OSU fans finally have something real to rally behind.
