In Monday’s coaches’ press conference at Alabama, first year offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb revealed that he made a mistake in the lead up to the Crimson Tide’s week 1 matchup with Florida State. Of course, Grubb and his squad were upset by the Seminoles in that game and they fielded an offense that struggled to get much going. Bama’s QB, Ty Simpson, finished that game with a completion percentage of 53.5% and a QB rating of 54.2 – not great. Fans have already been all over social media questioning him as the starter for the remainder of the year.
Grubb’s quote was, “I thought maybe I wasn’t hard enough on Ty [before Florida State]. I didn’t harden him enough for the moment … I didn’t want to make that same mistake again.”
This comment comes after a cake-walk win over UL-Monroe that saw a lot more offensive fireworks from the Tide and Simpson. In that contest, Ty threw for 3 TDs and completed 100% of his passes. His QB Rating was 99.3 in that matchup – much better.
It seems that Ryan Grubb and the Bama coaching staff plan to coach their guys a little tougher from now on, something that Tide fans are likely happy to hear. UL-Monroe is no Florida State, but we should get a chance to see if Simpson and his teammates can keep up the momentum against a solid Wisconsin squad in week 3. That game kicks off at 12 p.m. EST on ABC this Saturday.
