The Ring IV: Night of the Champions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday was more than just a fully loaded fight card. The event had major repercussions across multiple weight classes.
Abdullah Mason, 21, gutted out a hard-fought unanimous decision win over Sam Noakes to become the current youngest world champion in boxing, capturing the WBO lightweight title. Mason held the skill advantage but went 12 rounds for the first time in his professional career, needing to use exceptional body work and stamina to turn back an opponent who refused to back down.
Mason hurt Noakes several times during the fight, including a sequence in Round 7 when the young fighter drilled his opponent to the body. Noakes somehow survived the assault and fought back, putting Mason in some difficult positions in the later rounds.
Devin Haney climbed to the top of the welterweight rankings by defeating Brian Norman Jr. to win the WBO title with a brilliant boxing lesson. Haney dropped the power-punching Norman in the second round and never looked back, working behind a stiff jab and nullifying his opponent. Norman fell three spots to No. 4 after the loss.
Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez’s masterclass in finishing Fernando Martinez to unify three junior bantamweight titles sees him hold firm at No. 1, putting an enormous amount of distance between him and the rest of the field. Martinez remains at No. 2 considering that he holds two wins over ESPN’s No. 3-ranked junior bantamweight, Kazuto Ioka.
ESPN’s divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.
Fighters who haven’t competed in the past 12 months — and don’t have a fight scheduled — will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to reenter the rankings after his next bout.
