IBF lightweight champion Raymond Muratalla was the betting underdog against Cuban Olympic gold medalist Andy Cruz and proved the oddsmakers wrong by retaining his title with a hard-fought majority decision win in Las Vegas.

It was an extremely close fight in which Cruz boxed beautifully off of his back foot and had success countering Muratalla’s forward pressure. However, the judges favored Muratalla, who initiated the action.

An inexplicably wide scorecard of 118-110 in favor of Muratalla was offset by a 116-112 scorecard and an even score at 114-114.

The lightweights were separated by one punch on CompuBox, but Muratalla appeared to land the harder punches. It was the first time that Cruz fought past 10 rounds in his seven-fight pro career.

Muratalla (24-0, 17 KOs) moves up to No. 4 from No. 6 in the ESPN lightweight rankings, while Cruz (6-1, 3 KOs) holds his spot at No. 5.

On the undercard, Israil Madrimov got back in the win column after losing competitive 154-pound fights to Terence Crawford and Virgil Ortiz, respectively. Madrimov (11-2-1, 7 KOs) moved up to middleweight and defeated Luis David Salazar by unanimous decision. With the win, Madrimov debuts in ESPN’s middleweight rankings at No. 8.

ESPN’s divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.

Fighters who haven’t competed in the past 12 months — and don’t have a fight scheduled — will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to reenter the rankings after his next bout.
